In her final novel, Ann McLaughlin
returns to the scene, and the theme, of her first.

“Ann L. McLaughlin was born in 1928 and died in December 2016, at the age of 88. She was a writer throughout her life, active and influential in her writing community; and during the last 27 years of her life she wrote nine novels, all of them published by John Daniel & Company. At the end of her life she was still working at her craft, reviewing and correcting the final edit of her final novel, The Triangle.

Each of her novels is unique, but they return time after time to recurring themes, particularly coping with illness and disability and the heart-rending struggle of love and resentment in the relationship between father and daughter.

McLaughlin’s first novel, Lightning in July (1989) was set in Boston, in 1955, during the last major polio epidemic to attack that city. Her debut novel was well received; Publishers Weekly wrote “This poignant story, autobiographical in inspiration, we're told, is related with candor. McLaughlin's straightforward narration transforms the events of a prolonged hospital stay into a richly textured tale.“

Her last five novels had different settings, time periods, plots, and characters, but they all focused on loving but troublesome relationships between daughters and their workaholic fathers.

Ann McLaughlin’s final novel, The Triangle, returns to Boston’s 1955 polio epidemic, and combines the theme of coping with disability with that of struggle in the father-daughter friction and frustrated love. The author seems to have written the satisfying resolution to the two overriding conflicts in her fictive life. This powerful novel is a satisfying finale of a a brilliant career.

Ann L. McLaughlin grew up in Cambridge, MA. She published nine novels and had fellowships at the Virginia Center, Yaddo, and The Studios of Key West. She served on the board of The Writer’s Center in Bethesda, MD, where she taught for many years. A writer till the end of her life, Ms. McLaughlin died while her last book, The Triangle, was in production, and she read and corrected the final page proofs.
