Jeri Howard’s brother, Brian, has been missing for five days before she’s notified. And a trail can go pretty cold in that amount of time. Jeri has questions: Why is there a corpse in the Santa Rosa morgue with Brian’s MedicAlert bracelet? Why has Brian’s wife been gone so often lately, and what was their big fight about? Why did the family suddenly move to a new town, and a new job for Brian? Crisscrossing Sonoma County and calling in favors, the Oakland private investigator follows leads from Brian’s recent life, including an attractive confidante with some unsavory kinfolk. She discovers an ugly underbelly of the beautiful back country, including the degradation of state and national forest land as a result of marijuana cultivation on a grand scale. The Author’s Afterword includes a link about this destruction in a US Forest Service video, which is available on YouTube.
If Brian is still alive, Jeri must fight the time element to track him down—and rescue him before it’s too late.
