Inspiration, Grace, and
Wisdom:
Miriam's Gifts Even After Her Tragic Death
Recently the names of two Libyan citizens have been making
headlines.
They are the suspects accused of planting a bomb on Pan Am Flight
103,
the flight that exploded over Lockerbie, Scotland on December
21, 1988.
All 270 passengers on board were killed instantly, and 8 residents
of Lockerbie
were killed when the plane crashed into their town.
It's difficult to comprehend the tragic deaths of nearly 300
people.
They aren't individuals to most of us-we who watch the news,
read the papers,
listen to the radio. We can't forget this tragedy because the
fight for
justice drags it back into the media and to our attention. But
the families,
friends, and acquaintances of the victims of the bombing know
well who
died on that plane, and their lives will never be the same.
After the tragedy of flight 103, Charles Kuralt devoted his
program
Sunday Morning to Pan Am Flight 103. He read a letter
from a viewer,
prefacing it by saying, "It's difficult to think of large
numbers
of disaster victims as individuals, but we should try."
The letter
ended by stating, "There is now a serious imbalance in the
universe.
Miriam Wolfe was aboard Pan Am Flight 103. I thought you'd want
to know."
Now there is a book about Miriam Wolfe. Miriam's Gift:
A Mother's
Blessings-Then and Now by Rosemary Mild, Miriam's mother.
Very much
about the tragedy of the bombing, this is also a book about the
struggle
to come to terms with the loss of a loved one-a daughter-and
the struggle
to continue on with life.
After her death, Miriam continues to influence those who knew
her. Her
mother found her journals, her keepsakes, her artifacts-some
were returned
from the crash site. Mild learned even more about Miriam. She
was funny,
intelligent, philosophical, a perfectionist, psychological, loving,
and
deeply loved. Mild delighted in the wisdom and good humor she
found in
Miriam's journals (excerpts are here in the book). Inspired by
her charming
and energetic young daughter's legacy, she decided to write Miriam's
Gift. Here a mother honors her daughter-the memory of her
and her short
life-and she honors the struggle of surviving the loss of her.
