Steinbeck as Remembered
by the People Who Knew Him
Audry Lynch is a Steinbeck scholar and unabashed fan. She
has taught courses on his work and led tours of Steinbeck country,
she collects his first editions, and she is the author of With
Steinbeck in the Sea of Cortez.
Now, in Steinbeck Remembered-Interviews with Friends and
Acquaintances of John Steinbeck, Dr. Lynch has gathered together
twenty reminiscences from people who knew John Steinbeck personally.
These reminiscences and interviews cover three periods of Steinbeck's
life in California: his childhood in Salinas, his life as a fun-loving
crony of Ed "Doc" Ricketts in Cannery Row, and his
residence in Los Gatos as an established writer. They show a
life lived fully, and a man who knew how to live.
These portraits do not sugar-coat or beatify the man John
Steinbeck. They are honest and frank views of a person who could
be described as an odd boy, a hell-raiser, a drinker and a womanizer,
and a proud reclusive celebrity. Nevertheless, all the people
interviewed in this book remember the man fondly, and the composite
portrait that comes across is of a brilliant, talented artist,
a witty conversationalist, and a fun-loving and loyal friend.
His friends were the people he enjoyed and wrote about.
John Steinbeck appreciated the common man-and woman-and he
celebrated and championed them in his fiction. Although his work
has yet to be widely accepted by academics, he is undeniably
one of the twentieth century's most important American novelists.
Now, with this collection of eye-witness memories, we have a
good look at the man who gave us a good look at ourselves.
