Patience Mackellar who operates a low-keyed detective agency in the quiet coastal town of Port Silva, California has an almost official helper in her latest adventure. Daughter Verity, separated from abusive husband, Ted Blake, is now living with her and taking an active part in her investigations and considering getting a license of her own.
The case that test and endangers both Mackellars is that of a missing woman and her seven-year-old daughter. David Simonov comes to Patience to try to find his ex-wife Lily and daughter Sylvie. Lily married a childhood friend, Dev Costello after divorcing David. but a letter from her said that things werent going well and she was thinking of leaving Dev. Now shes disappeared and so has Dev whos also looking for them.
Acting in tandem and separately, Verity and Patience pursue paper trails and more tangible ones along Californias Lost Coast. Along with the misfits, iconoclasts and dropouts that inhabit this intriguing stretch of land the reader meets a heartbreaker of a young girl and unexpected heroes.
Janet LaPierres consistently excellent series--in depth characterization, a California setting as vivid and unique as any, and well plotted, engrossing stories built around an admirable heroine--merits recommendation form librarians, booksellers and reviewers.
