I Love a Mystery Review:

Keepers
A Port Silva Mystery

by
Janet LaPierre

Patience Smith Investigations has a new partner. Patience's daughter Verity tries her hand at the family business when her marriage fails and her mother expresses a need for an assistant. Patience believes her daughter needs the distraction, and what a distraction it turns out to be.!

They delve into a world neither anticipates when they're hired to find a missing ex-wife. In their search, mother and daughter stumble into a nest of religious fanatics, a cross between fundamentalists and survivalists. The common turns surreal as they close in on the missing mother and child.

LaPierre's character development is excellent. Her believable characters contain depth and human complexities, patience, warm and caring, connects fist to jaw when the situation dictates it. Verity, with beauty and brains, discovers courage she didn't know she had. LaPierre also provides the reader with several suspects and even tosses in a faceless stalker.

LaPierre writes with passion, and pulls the reader into this psychological thriller. Like a flowing stream, the story moves forward at a steady pace. My only disappointment is the four-letter words oddly inserted within the first chapters, dropped in at inappropriate times. (It's reminiscent of Hollywood producers seeking an "R" rating, thus better sales.) As the story progresses, however, LaPierre allows plot and characters to fill the reader's mind, rather than expletives.

If psychological thrillers are your forte, add KEEPERS to your collection.
