A DELICATE DEMARCATION:
LIVING IN THE WORLD
WITHIN AND WITHOUT
In today's fast-paced, volume-oriented, high-tech society,
we each need to set aside a little time to relax, contemplate,
or simply to sit quietly. But because the pace of our lives is
so quick, most of us rarely take this time.
Erline Dessie Goodell's new book, Gossamer Ribbons--An
Invitation to Meditation, is about this need in all of us.
Gossamer Ribbons approaches the subject of meditation
through poetry--poetry that entertains and informs, but also
guides us to places of insight and introspection. With a quiet
voice and clear meaning that's accessible to all, Goodell's reflections
help us to slow down and take the time to look at our own experiences
and reflect upon them.
Gossamer Ribbons is divided into six sections, each
taking up a different focus. "Stillness" contains poems
about solitude, emptiness, and the appreciation of what comes
with noticing the quieter aspects of life. "Balance Bending"
explores the elusive concept of balance--in our emotions, our
energy levels, and our pace of life, and the grace and delight
that are available when we momentarily attain balance; "Nature"
is about appreciation of the natural world and other creatures
who share it with us. The poems in "Woman" focus on
the emotions of the author as a woman and a poet. "Loss"contains
poems that celebrate the act of feeling one's grief and appreciating
what we've lost. The last section, "Action," is about
the gifts of learning and the lessons of openness.
Gossamer Ribbons is a straightforward volume of poetry
that packs a quiet punch. Like the Japanese Haiku that simply
and quietly states the large and the profound, Gossamer Ribbons
gently uncovers the multi-dimensional world of emotion that lies
beneath our sometimes not so tranquil surfaces.
Erline Dessie Goodell is an instructor in the Adult
Education division of Santa Barbara City College, teaching Religious
Studies and Women's Studies. She is cofounder and past director
of MidLife Zest, Inc., and facilitator of workshops in women's
spirituality. She lives and writes in Santa Barbara, California.
Gossamer Ribbons is her second collection of meditative
poetry.
